July 04, 2009 – September 12, 2009 Enjoy great music in a setting that overlooks the historic James River. In the Tradition hosts a different guest band every month including Hard Driving Grass, Deer Creek Boys, Eddie Gill and the Grass Masters, and Dobie Toms and Faith Ridge. July 04, 2009 – July 04, 2009 Local Farmers market from surrounding farms. Saturdays from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. behind the Tea Room at the Appomattox Gallery. Parking on Main or Harrell Streets. Amish breads, produce, baked goods, bedding plants and canned goods.
This program will demonstrate how muzzle loading weapons were loaded and discharged and how carbines operated. Also covered is how weapons technology influenced battle tactics, including the Battle of Appomattox Court House on the morning of April 9, 1865. Hours: 1:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Bring the family and enjoy a spectacular fireworks display to celebrate the Fourth of July, sponsored by the Town of Appomattox. These dazzling explosions of light can be seen from the Appomattox County High School parking lot at 9:00 p.m. For more information call 434-352-8268
July 04, 2009 – July 04, 2009 Ever wonder why the surrender of the Army of General Lee happened at Appomattox Court House? Come out to meet a Park Ranger from the National Park to find out. The ranger will have lots of fun facts and information about the campaign from Petersburg and the meeting between General Lee and General Grant. Meet under the tent between the Concession Stand and the Beach.
Walk the last battlefield of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, see where the last casualties fell, and how this battle led to Lee's decision to meet Grant that afternoon. Hours: 1:45 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
July 11, 2009 – July 11, 2009 It`s that time of year again! Appomattox Court House National Historical Park will be hosting its 13th annual Civil War summer day camps. This year Civil War day camp will be held on July 11, 14, 25, 28, and August 1 (Saturdays and Tuesdays). The camps are for children from the ages of 7 to 12 years old. Activities will include: military drills, equipment "show & tell" with a firing demonstration, signal corps activities (communicating with flags), and a game of rounders (Civil War baseball), just to name a few. Arrival time of all camps is between 8:45-9:00 a.m. Participants will meet at the flagpole at the main Appomattox Court House NHP parking lot. All camps run from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Bring water, bag lunch, sunscreen, and walking shoes. Space is limited. There is not a fee for the children, but adults staying must pay the $4 entrance fee. To reserve a space please call Candace Hart at 434-352-8987, ext. 34 and leave a message with the date your children are attending, their ages and a phone number. Come join the fun this summer and learn a little history too.

This event promises fun for the whole family. Activities include a fishing clinic, kids fishing derby, game station, river races, car show and live music. Festivities continue throughout the day. The adventurous two-mile race has a variety of categories - canoe, kayak, inflatable craft, and homemade river vessels. Preregistration is encouraged. Prizes are awarded for the fishing derby and races. Food and drink are available for sale. Rain date is July 26. There's a nominal registration fee.

August 07, 2009 – August 07, 2009 Bonfire on the Beach at Holliday Lake State Park Date: Friday, August 7, 2009 Time: 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM Location: Beach Description: A bonfire will be lighted on the beach and tales will be told of the early days at the park. Our park naturalist will tell how the lake was made in the 1930's, what's been going on here since then, and what we are doing now to keep Holliday Lake State Park a prime location for visitors to enjoy the outdoors. You will not want to miss this special program. Bring your own blanket or lawn chair for seating.

August 21, 2009 – August 21, 2009 Sponsored by the Lions Club, this year's annual food festival is slated to be "the largest food festival ever" and will take place in Courtland Field in downtown Appomattox. The expanded menu features lots of menu items to please everyone (chicken, pork chops, ribeye steaks, hamburgers, hotdogs, shrimp, lots of assorted veggies and salads, fresh fruit, and numerous desserts), plus your choice of cold beverages (tea, soft drinks, or beer). Live music entertainment will be provided by a band to be announced at a later date. RAIN OR SHINE EVENT! Lawn chairs are welcome! August 22, 2009 – August 22, 2009 This ranger led program will explain how the scouts operated, disguises and methods used, and how important they were to disrupt the Confederate efforts during the campaign from Petersburg to Appomattox. Also covered will be their significant action at Appomattox Station on April 8 that deeply impacted the outcome of Lee`s last campaign.
Join a special ranger program about the Confedeate battle flags that made it all the way to Appomattox Court House. Hours: 1:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.

Lichford/Budweiser, will host its third annual "Ember Fest" on Saturday, October 3, 2009 from 2p-7p in Courtland Field featuring live music entertainment from a definite crowd pleaser, THE WORX band. The event will also feature food concessions for a nominal charge from a variety of vendors, a BBQ cook-off competition (judging to begin at 3p), a 50/50 raffle, and dancing. The two-day festival is held on Main Street and the surrounding downtown area. December 06, 2009 – December 06, 2009 The annual Appomattox Christmas Parade and Community of Candles will take place on Sunday, Dec. 6th beginning at 1pm with downtown shops open for Christmas shoppers and closing at 6pm with the live nativity scene by Bible Baptist Church. Santa will greet everyone at the Visitor Center from 2-4pm, various musical groups will provide live music for downtown shoppers on Main Street from 2-4pm, and stew in Abbitt Memorial Park from 3-6pm. Christmas parade will commence at 4pm, followed by the Community of Candles at 4:30pm.
